MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN 院長寄語 In line with the University’s strategic development, the Faculty of Humanities (FHM) was founded in July 2012 (restructured from the former Faculty of Languages) to provide a more comprehensive learning environment and balanced emphasis on academic knowledge, cross-cultural awareness and intercultural competencies which help to nurture and groom our graduates in a wider spectrum of Humanities. As the youngest Faculty in EdUHK, the Faculty builds upon its pre-existing strengths in the discipline areas of language, literature and culture to focus on high quality programme offerings in a wider spectrum of Humanities related disciplines like Language Studies, General and Applied Linguistics, Literature, Cultural Studies and History, with the development of other new areas in the ensuing years. On the research front, we are devoted to conducting academic research in various discipline areas of Humanities. With the establishment of the Faculty-level Research Centres including the Centre for Popular Culture in the Humanities, the Centre for Research on Linguistics and Language Studies and the Research Centre for Chinese Literature and Literary Culture, the Faculty also works with the University-level Research Centres, pulling together research teams and strengthening academic publications, contributing to the advancement of the humanities disciplines. I look forward to working closely with all the stakeholders of FHM in the coming days. Areas of Expertise 專業範圍 • Chinese literary criticism 中國文學批評 • Chinese poetry and poetics 中國詩與詩學 • Chinese literary historiography 中國文學史理論 • Hong Kong literature 香港文學 Professor CHAN Kwok Kou Leonard 陳國球教授 Chair Professor of Chinese Literature, Department of Literature and Cultural Studies 文學及文化學系中國文學講座教授 Director, Research Centre for Chinese Literature and Literary Culture 中國文學文化研究中心總監 Professor Chan Kwok Kou Leonard’s research interests have radiated out from classical Chinese literature. Enriched by structuralism, Chinese modern literature and comparative literature, he develops his unique voice in literary historiography and poetics. Nevertheless, the pressing concern for the meaning and social function of literature in the contemporary and everyday world has never subsided in his intellectual pursuit. His recent publications include "Literature as Knowledge? - Literary Criticism, Literary Studies, and Literary Education" (2013), "Discourses on Lyrical China" (2013), and "Modernity of Lyricism: Essays on Chinese Lyrical Tradition" (2014, co-edited with Professor Wang Der-wei David). He is the chief editor of the on-going project "Compendium of Hong Kong Literature". The first series on 1919-1949 of twelve volumes were published in 2014-2016. His reflections on the lyrical tradition of Chinese literature and lyricism have attracted much attention within and beyond the academia. His book "Hong Kong in Its History of Lyricism" (2016) won the 10th Hong Kong Book Prize in 2017 and was selected as one of the Top Ten Books (non-fiction) of 2016 by "Yazhou Zhoukan" (Asia Weekly). In 2016, Professor Chan was awarded the Artist of the Year (Arts Criticism) by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Professor Chan has been Visiting Professor of the University of Alberta and Charles University in Prague, and Visiting Scholar of Harvard University, Columbia University and Tokyo University, among many others in Mainland China and Taiwan. Areas of Expertise 專業範圍 • Chinese intellectual history 中國思想史 • Studies of Yijing and its philosophy 易經研究及其哲學 • East Asian hermeneutic traditions and theories 東亞詮釋傳統和理論 • Intellectual history in late imperial China 清代學術史 Professor CHENG Kat Hung Dennis 鄭吉雄教授 Chair Professor of Cultural History, Department of Literature and Cultural Studies 文學及文化學系文化歷史講座教授 Professor Cheng Kat Hung Dennis is famous for being one of the leaders involved in the “Project of Pursuing for Excellence (first phase)” (2000-2004) and in setting up the “NTU Centre for the Study of East Asian Civilisation” (2002-2006), both initiated and supported by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan. He has been active in giving talks at top universities in the east and west and had worked in two world leading international institutions in Asian Studies as “Senior Visiting Research Fellow” at the Asia Research Institute (ARI) of National University of Singapore (2007) and “European Chair of Chinese Studies” (ECCS) at the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) of Leiden University, the Netherlands (2010-2011). He is the chief editor of the Book series “History of Chinese Thoughts” of the Taiwan University Press. He is appointed by UGC as member of the Humanities Panel in the RAE 2014. Professor Cheng specialises in a variety of areas in Chinese studies, mainly on Confucianism, Chinese intellectual history and East Asian hermeneutic traditions focusing on the interpretation theories of the Classic of Changes (Yijing and their commentaries), involving the disciplines of history, philology, philosophy, and their inner connections. His main research areas include Classical Chinese, history of Chinese language and the Buddhist Chinese. He was a Professor at the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, both in Sichuan University and Peking University, and also the Founding Dean of Yuanpei College, Peking University. He also served as a member and Vice Chair of the Consultancy Committee for Tertiary Institutes' Chinese Language and Literature Education, Ministry of Education, Mainland China (2001-2012), an executive member of the International Association of Chinese Linguistics (2005-2007) and an executive member of the Chinese Linguistics Society (2000-present). Currently, he serves as the Adjunct Professor in several domestic universities, and is a member of the editorial boards of some academic journals. Professor Zhu has published about a hundred of works and refereed papers. He has developed "A Database of Chinese Buddhist translation and their Sanskrit parallels for the Buddhist Chinese Studies". He is currently the principal investigator of the GRF research project "On the motivations of some important changes of pronouns in the history of Chinese language". KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER 知識轉移 International Conference 國際研討會 Over 100 international Chinese language experts, scholars and teachers gathered at The Education University of Hong Kong on 24 June 2017 for the 3rd International Conference on Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. The event was organised by the Department of Chinese Language Studies and the Master of Arts in Teaching Chinese as an International Language Programme of the Faculty of Humanities, co-organised by the School of Chinese at The University of Hong Kong and the Swarthmore College in the United States. The conference also celebrated the launch of an international journal. The conference provided an academic platform for Chinese teaching experts and colleagues around the world to exchange ideas, explore the current situation, innovation and development of Chinese teaching at the international level and discuss related issues on Chinese language teaching and International Baccalaureate/Advanced Placement courses. Experts and scholars from the United States, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Mainland China, Taiwan, Macau and Hong Kong also participated in the event. 逾百名國際漢語教學專家、學者與教師於2017年6月24日匯聚香港教育大學， 出席由中國語言學系和人文學院國際漢語教學文學碩士課程主辦、香港大學 中文學院和美國索思摩大學協辦的「第三屆國際漢語教學研討會」，並即席為 《國際中文教育學報》期刊舉行發布。 研討會為世界各國漢語教學專家及同儕搭建交流平台，讓一眾專家探討國際漢語 教學的現狀、革新與發展，並討論國際文憑（International Baccalaureate）和大學 先修（Advanced Placement）課程與漢語教學的相關課題。與會學者分別來自 美國、韓國、日本、新加坡、泰國、越南、中國內地、台灣、澳門和香港等地。 FHM Brochure 14 |
Influential Research 具影響力的研究 Supported by the Quality Education Fund, Professor Si Chung-mou, Head of the Department of Chinese Language Studies, led a research team to carry out a project on “The Analects of Confucius and Modern Society”. The project explored the important relationship between the Analects and society in the 21st century through experimental teaching and extracurricular language activities. A compilation of the experimental material, a book entitled “The Analects and Modern Society” has been published, with copies recently presented to all secondary schools, universities and public libraries. With local and overseas experts serving as advisors, the research team conducted experimental teaching in 17 Hong Kong secondary schools. The key activities of the programme included developing the syllabus, preparing experimental materials, establishing a website, training teachers and carrying out experimental teaching. Supporting activities such as cultural lectures, workshops, Chinese camps, micro-film production competitions, a research forum and international symposiums were also organised. The programme attracted participation of secondary school teachers and students from Hong Kong as well as global experts and scholars. 由中國語言學系系主任施仲謀教授領導的研究團隊，獲優質教育基金資助，開展「論語與現代社會」研究 計劃，通過實驗教學和課外語文活動，探討《論語》與學生所身處的二十一世紀社會的重要關係。研究團隊 早前將實驗教材結集成《論語與現代社會》一書，並免費贈予全港中學、各大學圖書館及公共圖書館。 研究計劃邀請了海內外專家擔任顧問，研究團隊在本港17所學校進行實驗教學。參加實驗的學校老師， 通過工作坊，掌握實驗教材的編寫精神、施教方法和評估方式，並進行階段性評估。計劃除了制訂學習 大綱、編寫實驗教材、建立資料庫網站、培訓教師和進行實驗教學作為重點項目外，更以舉辦文化講座、 工作坊、國學營、微電影創作比賽、研究成果分享會和國際研討會等方式全方位配合，並獲全港中學師生 與環球專家學者的熱心參與。 Community Outreach Seminars 社區講座 The Department of English Language Education has organised a series of public lectures for the general public who are interested in English and English teachers who would like to enhance their subject knowledge. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS 學生成就 Graduates Fly High 畢業生榮獲佳績 邁向新里程 LEUNG Yuk Tin Yvette 梁鈺鈿 Three graduates of the Bachelor of Education (Honours) (English Language) (Five-year) programme of the Faculty of Humanities in 2017 have received scholarships and pursued studies overseas. 人文學院英國語文教育榮譽（五年制）學士 課程三位應屆畢業生獲頒獎學金遠赴海外 著名大學深造。 Miss LEUNG Yuk Tin Yvette received the Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme. She has joined the MA in International Educational Development programme at the Columbia University in the United States, and she hopes to work in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government after completing her studies. 梁鈺鈿同學獲頒香港卓越獎學金。梁同學遠赴美國 哥倫比亞大學修讀國際教育發展碩士課程。日後， 她希望加入香港特別行政區政府工作。 FHM Brochure 16 |
Bibi TAYYABA 葉慧儀 WANG Pengjin Jack 王鵬錦 Mr WANG Pengjin Jack received the HKSAR Government Scholarship. He has been admitted to the University of Oxford for studying MSc in Education (Language and Technology) programme starting from the 2017/18 academic year. 王鵬錦同學獲頒香港特別行政區政府獎學金。於2017/18 學年，王同學獲牛津大學取錄並修讀教育（語文及科技） 碩士課程。 Miss Bibi TAYYABA was awarded the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship. She has been admitted to the MSc in Education (Higher Education) programme of the University of Oxford starting from the 2017/18 academic year.
